
On board Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Boreas, various deck equipment systems play a crucial role in transporting, positioning and installing monopiles for offshore wind farms.
For several of these systems, MSA-Service provided the electrical installation, control and automation through various clients. In doing so, MSA-Service contributed to the reliable and safe operation of critical deck installations.
MSA-Service’s work involved various systems on board the Boreas. Each system has its own function within the monopile installation process, from sea fastening and skidding to guiding, positioning and providing safe access.
For these installations, MSA-Service handled the engineering, production and installation of the electrical systems. The complete control and automation were also engineered and carried out by MSA-Service.
For Hycom, MSA-Service worked on the Seafastenings, including the Mono Pile Seafastening Port Side and Mono Pile Seafastening Starboard.
These installations are used to sea-fasten monopiles during transit and can also be used for skidding monopiles on deck. The adjustable saddles are suitable for various monopile diameters and can be automatically adjusted to the required diameter.
MSA-Service also provided the electrical installation, control and automation for Hycom’s Upend Hinge.
During transit, this installation is used as a sea fastening system. During installation, the Upend Hinge guides the monopile as it moves from a horizontal to a vertical position. This tool is also equipped with adjustable saddles that can be automatically set to the required monopile diameter.
Hycom’s Gripper is used to position and guide the monopile when it is placed on the seabed and driven into the ground.
The tool consists of a main frame and a gripper ring. The Gripper can move inboard and outboard, be adjusted in height and make sideways corrections. Using roller boxes and orientation wheels, the monopile can be guided and accurately positioned.
MSA-Service also developed a Gripper Simulator for the Gripper. This enables operators to be trained without the installation actually moving. The movements are realistically displayed on visual screens. MSA-Service supplied the complete software and hardware for this simulator.
For TMS, MSA-Service worked on the BLIT XL, the Boat Landing Installation Tool. This autonomous tool is placed on top of an installed monopile and is used to install access facilities for maintenance vessels.
The BLIT XL communicates with the vessel via Wi-Fi and can be operated remotely. MSA-Service provided the electrical installation, control and automation for this tool.
For Verhoef Access Technology, MSA-Service worked on the Gangway. This telescopic walkway is used to give personnel safe access to the vessel or to a platform on a monopile.
MSA-Service also provided the electrical installation, control and automation for this installation.
