LCS replacement on MV Insular

Just before Christmas, MSA-Service Noord BV received an order for the delivery of an Engine Control System (ECS) to replace a Local Control System (LCS) on a 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 38A engine on board the MV "Insular".

The project scope was:

replacement of the LCS of the 9W38A engine, including the WoodWard 721 speed controller;
delivery of our Engine Control System (ECS) with Bureau Veritas approval;
installation of the ECS in Portugal;
commissioning of the ECS;
adjustment of the parameters of the new WoodWard 2300E speed controller;

All this with the following conditions:

the ECS had to be delivered, installed and commissioned within 5 weeks;
hardware interface with the ship system had to be identical to the old LCS system;
the software interface with the alarm system had to be identical to the old system;
it had to be a turn-key solution.

De installatie en inbedrijfstelling is gedaan door MSA-service in Lissabon. De retrofit was gepland aan het einde van de motorrevisie, dus het was mogelijk om de motor te testen aan het einde van de inbedrijfstelling. De installatie en inbedrijfstelling van het systeem eindigde op 29 januari 2019 met een goedkeuring ter plaatse door een surveyer van Bureau Veritas. Het hele project, van opdracht tot proefvaart, duurde slechts 4,5 weken.
