Many systems and signals are present on board, only now these systems often run side by side. During the work that the employees of MSA-Service perform on board and the discussions with the customer, from service engineer, electrical super intendant to fleet owner, we came to the development of the Multiped.
This flexible and scalable 'standard solution' is therefore an a-typical activity of ours. With our innovation, we want to help maritime contractors get more out of their equipment with the help of data and contribute to the sustainability ambitions of the maritime sector. This is done with an industrial data collection and reporting platform, which unlocks the opportunities offered by sensor data in a user-friendly way for technicians and ship owners.
In outline, the Multiped is capable of:
- collect data integrally (from different systems and protocols);
- store large quantities of high-frequency data (up to 1000 Hz) in a standardized manner for the longer term;
- display the measurement data on board quickly and user-friendly in dashboards, which can be easily put together by the user;
- data can be enriched by adding measurements made by the user to the measured data, such as hand soundings and failures that have occurred;
- log all adjustments made by the user to the settings, so that the data is always reliable;
- export data for further analysis;
- securely share and synchronize data with suppliers, customers and owners (data can also be viewed on shore);
- detect long period trends for predictive maintenance;
- Apply alarm points to an expected overrun of one or combined signals;
- simply link the selected signals as control information to higher-level systems.
The innovation is called Multiped. We chose this name for two reasons. First of all, the name embodies exactly what this innovation is; a multiped that helps maritime entrepreneurs gain much more insight into their vessel and operation. We chose the English word because of the international ambitions we have with this innovation.

Once again MSA-Service has been selected as a strategic partner by Van Oord. For a part of the fleet they will again be responsible for the automation, and the complete electrics and instrumentation for the next three years. The fleet of Van Oord on which MSA-Service is working, consists trailing suction hopper dredgers(TSHD), cutter suction dredgers and offshore (wind) vessels.
For the period 2021-2023, Machiel 't Hoen, director of MSA-Service has signed another agreement to work with Van Oord as a strategic supplier. For MSA-Service, an electrical automation company, this means that they are responsible for the electrical maintenance of part of the fleet. But also the management of the dredging computer up to and including the underwater sensors on the suction pipe falls under their responsibility.
Through this partnership, Van Oord values its partners. MSA-Service is familiar with the fleet and can switch quickly. This enables us to contribute to cost reduction and sustainability goals, such as reducing emissions.
Since 2016, Van Oord has been working with strategic partners. As MSA-Service, we are therefore proud to have been involved from the beginning of these collaborations. The Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT) trade association is the first port of call for and primary representative of the Dutch maritime technology sector. A monitoring and control system of a diesel engine is subject to vibrations and high temperatures. This causes the product lifecycle of a diesel engine to differ from the product lifecycle of a monitoring and control system.
Renewing an engine monitoring and safety system will upgrade it to the latest safety standards.
The engineers of MSA-Service Noord gained considerable experience in the development of such systems for large diesel engines at a large engine manufacturer.Using this knowledge they have developed a universal Engine Control System (ECS), suitable for large diesel engines
The system can easily be adapted to every engine type. The ECS can be used as a pin compatible replacement of an existing engine monitoring and safety system, but can also be an extension to your existing engine monitoring and safety system.
The system is built up modularly, so the systems can vary from a small type approved engine safety system to a complete engine monitoring and control system.
Options like remote monitoring using direct wiring or the cloud can be implemented.

New Non-Nuclear Totaliser for Dredging
ITS is pleased to announce the launch of the Totalising-itometer at Euroports 2017.
This new instrument – developed with MSA-Service – integrates ITS’s already successful Densitometer with a standard flow meter to measure total production.
Not only does the new instrument provide the industry standard cross-hair indicators of flow and density, the extra flow information from seeing inside the pipeline can give operator the ability to dynamically see production levels as a guide to optimising production. Only the tomography technology from ITS is able to provide all of this information for dredging operators.
